Libraries are gateways to knowledge, but their importance goes beyond merely providing books. They provide knowledge, support intellectual, social, and emotional development in developing countries, addressing limited educational access: they are vital bridges to closing the education gap. ITAV is dedicated to ensuring that all children, no matter where they may find themselves in the world, have access to libraries.
Equal Access to Education:
In developing countries, access to quality education remains a challenge for many children. Statistics show that a mere 1 in 6 children in Africa have access to quality education, a situation that is quite worrisome. ITAV libraries are breaking the educational barrier by offering a wide range of educational resources, from textbooks and reference materials to online databases. When learners are given free access to learning tools, they can acquire valuable skills for the future and break free from the cycle of poverty.
Promoting Literacy:
Reading is the foundation of learning, and libraries serve as nurturing grounds for fostering a love for books and literacy in children. Unfortunately, literacy rates remain low in much of the developing world where a culture of reading is yet to exist. One of the ways that ITAV libraries try to instill a love of reading is through our Village Voices program where our favorite children’s book authors visit with our learners for a virtual storytime. These events help inspire our students and lend to creating a culture of reading, connection, and learning within our libraries.
Encouraging Critical Thinking and Creativity:
ITAV libraries create a room for critical thinking and creativity. Our Libraries provide spaces for learners to explore and imagine a new world. Learners are encouraged to engage in artistic activities, allowing them to visually express their ideas, thoughts, and concepts. Through drawing, they delve into problem-solving, envision different perspectives, and articulate their unique viewpoints. ITAV Libraries offer an environment that encourages curiosity, innovation, and self-expression, enabling children to think beyond the boundaries of their circumstances.
Fostering Social Skills and Community Engagement:
ITAV libraries serve as vibrant community hubs that bring children together, fostering social cohesion and shared learning experiences. When learners participate in our storytelling and reading sessions, including special library events, they create a community that can offer support, guidance, and mentorship.
Our Mentor Programs provide specialized support for students with the mission of empowering the next generation of children across the globe by providing them with resources and connections they otherwise would not have access to. By participating in library events, club activities, and group study sessions, children develop social skills, empathy, and a sense of belonging.
Digital Literacy and Technological Advancements:
Digital technology opens up a world of educational resources and interactive learning experiences. But unless we expand access, digital technology may create new divides that prevent children from fulfilling their potential. ITAV libraries provide access to computers, the internet, and technology-focused learning. These tools enable children to enhance their digital literacy skills, stay informed, and adapt to the rapidly evolving technological landscape. It also empowers children to be active participants in the digital sphere and equips them with the knowledge to utilize digital platforms for educational, economic, and personal growth.
